What Does Your Iris Colour Mean?

Your iris colour is one of the most distinctive features of your face โ€” and one of the most genetically complex. Contrary to popular belief, eye colour isn't determined by a single gene but by a network of at least eight genes influencing the amount, type, and distribution of melanin in the iris. Here's what science โ€” and centuries of observation โ€” have to say about each colour.

How Iris Colour Is Formed

The iris contains two layers: the anterior border layer (front) and the posterior pigment epithelium (back). The amount of melanin in the anterior layer determines eye colour. High melanin = dark brown eyes. Low or absent melanin = blue eyes (which appear blue due to the Tyndall effect โ€” the same physics that makes the sky blue). Intermediate amounts produce green, hazel, and grey variations.

Two types of melanin are involved: eumelanin (brown-black) and pheomelanin (yellow-red). Amber and hazel eyes result from higher pheomelanin contributions.

Dark Brown

The most common eye colour worldwide, especially prevalent in Africa, Asia, and South America. High eumelanin content provides excellent UV protection. Medium / Light Brown
~20% of the global population
A rich mix of eumelanin and structural colour. Common across southern Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia. Often associated with adaptability and approachability. Light brown irises frequently show flecks of green or amber under direct sunlight.
Hazel
~5% of the global population
One of the most variable eye colours โ€” hazel can appear brown, green, or gold depending on lighting conditions. This variability results from moderate melanin in the anterior layer combined with Rayleigh scattering. Linked to spontaneity, curiosity, and a rich inner life. Hazel eyes are more common in people of European descent.
Green
~2% of the global population
The rarest natural eye colour. Green results from a unique combination of low eumelanin, elevated pheomelanin, and Rayleigh scattering. Most common in northern and central Europe. Associated with creativity, independence, and a strong sense of individuality. A 2021 study found green-eyed individuals scored higher on openness to experience in personality assessments.
Blue
~8โ€“10% of the global population
Blue irises contain virtually no melanin in the anterior layer โ€” the colour is entirely structural, produced by light scattering in the stroma. All humans with blue eyes share a common ancestor who lived approximately 6,000โ€“10,000 years ago (University of Copenhagen, 2008). Associated with introspection, sensitivity, and calm analytical thinking.
Blue-Green / Teal
~3โ€“4% of the global population
A striking intermediate that can shift between blue and green depending on surrounding colours and light. Often mistaken for pure blue or pure green in photos. Associated with perceptiveness, adaptability, and a calm, analytical temperament.
Grey
~3% of the global population
Grey eyes are a low-saturation variant often categorised alongside blue, but they are technically distinct. The grey tone comes from minimal melanin combined with thin collagen fibres in the stroma, which produce a muted scattering effect. Common in northern and eastern Europe. Linked to analytical precision and quiet strength.
Amber
<1% of the global population
Amber is one of the rarest human eye colours, characterised by a warm golden or copper hue with minimal blue scattering. It results from an unusually high proportion of pheomelanin relative to eumelanin. More common in amber-eyed dogs and birds than humans. Associated with decisiveness, self-assurance, and a strong sense of identity.

Does Eye Colour Affect Vision?

Yes โ€” slightly. Lighter eyes have less pigment to absorb UV light and high-energy visible light, making them more light-sensitive (photophobia). People with blue or grey eyes are statistically more likely to experience discomfort in bright sunlight and have a slightly elevated risk of certain ocular conditions including macular degeneration with age. Higher melanin content offers some natural protection.

Can Eye Colour Change?

In most adults, eye colour is stable. However, it can appear to shift due to lighting, clothing, and emotional state (pupil dilation can make the iris appear darker). Some conditions and medications can permanently alter iris pigmentation. Babies of Northern European descent are frequently born with blue eyes that darken with melanin production in the first 3 years.
